Chocolate is Happiness You Can Eat

We’ve all heard the word superfoods; foods that contain significantly higher quantities of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and health-boosting benefits. I’m sure you’ve tried a few like broccoli or blueberries but I bet you’d choose chocolate over blueberries or broccoli any day. Here is the first of many super foods I’ll be informing you about so you can choose to make eating habits healthy and delicious, maybe even a little exotic like our first superfood the cacao bean. Grown in the Amazon of Peru, cacao is a fruit that grows on trees. The fruits of the cacao tree are called cacao pods, which contain cacao beans that are used as the basis of chocolate.

Did you know cacao is:

  1.  40 times the antioxidants of blueberries. Move over blueberries because cacao has an incredible ORAC score of 98,000 per 100g versus blueberries at a mere 2,400. (ORAC scores measure the ability of antioxidants to absorb free radicals.)
  2. Highest plant-based source of iron. If you need iron, cacao is the highest plant-based source of iron known to man at a whopping 7.3 mg per 100 g compared to spinach at 3.6 mg. You’ll need to combine with some Vitamin C to get the maximum benefits. Try an Easy Cacao/Banana Smoothie. (recipe below)
  3. Full of Magnesium. The most deficient mineral in the Western world, cacao is one of the highest plant-based sources of magnesium.  Magnesium is important for a healthy heart and brain and helps turn glucose into energy enabling your brain to work with clarity and focus.
  4. More calcium than cow’s milk. A latte or a couple squares of chocolate? Your choice.
  5. A natural mood elevator and anti-depressant. Serotonin, tryptophan, tyrosine and phyenylenthylamine are neurotransmitters associated with warm and cozy feelings. A natural, healthy and delicious way to get a happy buzz on.

 EASY Cacao/Banana Smoohtie

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tbsp creamy almond butter
  • 1 tbsp organic raw cacao powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 frozen medium banana
  • pinch sea salt
  •  ice cubes
  1. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend for about 2 minutes until well combined.

  2. Pour in glass and enjoy!

Real Queens Fix Each Other’s Crowns

In the age of social media it’s very easy to connect with friends you’ve lost touch with. Reconnecting with your childhood girlfriends can be extremely rewarding. They know where you came from and what you’ve been through. Spend time with them and celebrate your trials and tribulations, tell your secrets, your wants and desires BUT never judge! Why do we do that? It serves no purpose.

As we get older, we seem to make time for everything but our girlfriends. Probably because they’ve always been around and we can always reschedule, right? I say, make the time. Just because they’ve been around forever doesn’t mean they’ll be around forever.

Sometimes we need a reminder and other times…..we’re reminded of who will actually make the time. In the end, if you’re there, she’ll be there.

Love Your Skin, Give Oil A Go

Acne and aging seem to be the bushwhackers of skin issues. Anti-aging routines call for lots of moisture, which doesn’t always work so well on blemish-prone skin. When you choose a product you have to decide which is the lesser of two evils. Would you rather combat zits or smooth away wrinkles? We’ve all heard that retinols can put an end to acne as well as fend off the signs of aging but it can also cause irritation and redness and leave your skin looking like a charred tomato!

If you haven’t already heard, there is some good news about acne and aging. A group of scientists at King’s College London released a study that showed acne-prone skin may not age as quickly. They discovered adults with acne often have longer telomeres. Telomeres are chromosomal end-caps that look like little plastic tips on shoelaces whose shortening is associated with aging and they protect our genetic material from getting frayed as cells naturally divide over time. This has one thinking…would you rather deal with pimples or have a couple of lines appear on your face?

Maybe I can help correct both issues, for some sufferers out there, with a simple remedy: oil. One of the services a mechanic might suggest next time you’re in his shop is an engine flush, which is exactly what is sounds like; it flushes the gunk out of your engine. Why not do the same for your skin as you do for your car? Find an excellent oil and unclog your pores of bacteria, excess oil production and dead skin.

I use all sorts oils but if I had to pick my three favorite oils for acne-prone and aging skin they would be:

Evening Primrose
Evening Primrose soothes and moisturizes the skin while enhancing elasticity. It promotes a healthy, clear, rejuvenated complexion and addresses roughness, wrinkles, redness, dryness, and irritation. It facilitates the healing process, reduces the appearance of scars, and calms inflammation.

Tamanu oil facilitates the growth of newer skin and leaves the skin feeling smoother and softer. It soothes, repairs, and diminishes redness, scars, stretch marks, irritation, itchiness, dryness, and peeling. It prevents blemishes from forming and it protects against the harsh effects of the elements. It works to reduce age spots, stretch marks, cellulite, and dryness.

Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil can penetrate the skin easily, due to the small size of its molecules. It offers excellent emollience to dry, itchy skin and hair, remaining suitable for sensitive, inflamed and irritated skin. It creates a protective barrier on the skin’s surface, locking in moisture to soften, lubricate, and cool skin while preventing future dryness as well as fungus. It effectively soothes sunburns and blisters, removes dead skin, and promotes the growth of newer, healthier skin for a glowing complexion. I, personally, don’t use coconut oil on my face on a regular basis but use it daily on my entire body.

What Horses Teach Us

I spent half my life growing up around horses. On my grandmother’s horse farm I learned what it took to love these magnificent animals. My grandmother had a rule; if you wanted to ride, you had to do the work first. That included mucking out the stalls (there is nothing more humbling than cleaning gigantic piles of poop with a pitchfork), feeding the horses, brushing their coats and cleaning their hooves, polishing the tack, filling the water buckets; a laundry list of chores. When that was done, you could ride! When I think back, it was a ritual. Seeing the horses walk briskly towards me as I entered the paddock because they knew it was feeding time. When I would walk towards the stalls with them all around me, I could feel their energy. It was an unspoken connection. Cleaning their stalls as they chomped happily on hay, oats and sweet feed gave me a feeling of love, pride and responsibility. I will cherish those moments forever. We all had our favorite horses and mine was, Tattoo. Bridle and saddle securely on, it was time to ride. I tell you this story because I believe animals are a big part of who we become.

There are so many self-discipline habits that can make you a successful and happy person but I’ll keep it short and share five amazing traits I believe become habit when you grow up around horses or any animal that you need to care for.

  1. You’ll have a strong work ethic. Practice makes perfect.
  2. Develop relationships. Who isn’t a better person when you can bond in an unspoken way.
  3. Respect. A horse responds to who you are, how you feel, what you think, and what you do. Give them the same.
  4. Don’t be afraid. To be able to manage, manipulate, and train a large animal gives you a feeling of confidence.
  5. Stay humble. Have you ever fallen off a horse? They will wait patiently for you to brush yourself off and get back in the saddle.

EFT – News or Nonsense?

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, also know as tapping is a simple method that blends Modern Psychology and Chinese Medicine. It works on the root cause of your issues and rewires limiting patterns and habits. By bringing positive emotions to pain, tapping supports you in replacing negative feelings with positive ones.

There are many reasons people don’t use tapping. They think the idea is weird or silly. It’s hard to remember, they can’t think of what to say, or think it’s pure nonsense. Tapping is not a magic bullet but can be a wonderful self-help tool that can be used in many situations to help improve your attitude. Daylight “Saving” or “Savings” Time?

If you guessed, “saving”, you’re correct. Daylight saving time without an S!

Daylight saving time has been around for centuries. Some point to Ben Franklin’s satirical 1784 essay that suggested the late-rising French take advantage of morning sunlight to save on candles. Germany was the first country to adopt daylight saving time in 1916 to save energy during World War I, and other countries followed. Nowadays, for most Americans, daylight saving time means only one thing; losing an hour’s sleep. 

So what’s the point? The point is we move clocks forward one hour in the spring because of longer days in the middle of the year, presumably using less lighting. We revert to “standard time” in the fall turning the clocks back one hour. As I was taught to remember, Spring ahead, Fall back!

But some studies suggest when we spring forward by one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, it will likely prompt an increase in heart attacks and strokes, cause more car accidents and reduce worker productivity. Disruptions, even minor ones, to human beings’ sleep patterns can have colossal effects, according to researchers. Also, studies have generally failed to show significant energy savings associated with the shift.

Legislators in some states have tried unsuccessfully to pass laws abandoning daylight saving time. Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that do not reset clocks. So for now, Sunday morning will come just a little bit earlier than usual for most of us. My suggestion….sleep in an extra hour or two this Sunday and catch up on your beauty sleep. After all, isn’t that what Sunday mornings are for?
